6. 2nd Annual Earth Day Houston Festival, 5K & Green Expo - April 3, 2010

FREE DATE IDEA!!!

The 2nd Annual Earth Day Houston Festival, 5K & Green Expo is at Discovery Green this Saturday, April 3, 2010. Festivities kick off at 8:00am with the Earth Day Houston 5K. And you know what they say... a couple who runs 5Ks together, stays together. Okay maybe they don't say that, but it could be true. Click Here for more details, including registration, race route, fees and deadlines.

If you prefer to sleep in Saturday morning and avoid the whole race thing altogether, you'll have until 6:00pm to join in on the Earth Day festivities. Enjoy live music and get education on the latest "Green" products at the Earth Day Houston Green Expo.

Feel Free to paint yourself green to show your Earth Day spirit - just be sure to use environmentally friendly paint!

5. Pinot and Picasso

Aren't you curious to know how your honey really sees you?? A self-portrait is a sure way to find out. Well, that is unless your significant others' artistic hand is stuck in kindergarten.

Either way Pinto and Picasso is a fun date idea. Bring your own wine, cocktails and appetizers. Pinot and Picasso provides the canvas, paint, aprons, wine glasses and instructors. At the end of the date, you'll leave with a beautiful (hopefully) piece of art created by you and yours.

Visit the website to book a date for April. The classes fill up fast!

4. Ballroom Dancing!

Dancing With the Stars has shed a new light on ballroom dancing. It's a fun way to spend time with your significant other and get in shape! Group classes offer a more affordable option over private lessons and can also be a great way to get several couple friends together and compare dance moves. You can find several dance schools all over the city to fit your schedule and location preference.

The Dance Whisperer offers a free dance lesson for first timers. Cheap date idea!

The most affordable group lessons I found are at Dance-Passion.com $40 per person for 4 lessons. They offer traditional or latin ballroom classes for all levels. Classes start in early April, so visit the website and get your dancing shoes ready!

3. Art Bike 2010 - Discovery Green

If you haven't been to Discovery Green yet, you're missing out. LEED Gold Certified, the 12-acre park in downtown Houston offers something for everyone. With a one-acre lake, a children's playground, interactive water features, amphitheater, dog runs, public art, HPL Express, ample green space and yummy restaurants, there's no shortage of things to do. The park plays host to many events including free fitness classes, art exhibits, "Screen on the Green", lunchtime concerts, workshops and farmers markets.

From March 25-April 22, Art Bike 2010, benefiting the Multiple Sclerosis Society, presents "26 artistically transformed bikes by local artists. In conjunction with National MS Awareness Week and the 26th Anniversary of the BP MS 150, ART BIKE 2010 is an installation of art with a cause."

Pack a picnic basket to be cute or enjoy one of the nearby restaurants - The Grove or the Lake House - and take a stroll in the park. If you have one, bring your canine along and let dogs be dogs. Click on the Events Calendar to find an event that interests you.

Visit Discovery Green to find out more about the park.

The Sweet Sixteen comes to Reliant Stadium tonight for the NCAA South Regional. Even if your team is out of the tournament at this point, college hoops are exciting and a great opportunity to experience tradition with your honey! The Baylor Bears are the last Texas team remaining, and I plan on rooting them on to victory!

Baylor Bears v. St. Mary's Gaels

&
Purdue Boilermakers v. Duke Blue Devils

About this Blog

Being the culture vulture that I am while trying to date a traditional homebody for nearly 5 years, I've often found myself frustrated with my fiancés utter lack of creativity when it comes to taking me out on dates. At first I chalked it up to mild differences and skeptically embraced the phrase, "opposites attract," but later conceded the fact that we're people, not magnets. Eventually I started taking it rather personally, thinking perhaps he was unwilling rather than incapable, of coming up with something unique and interesting to do that didn't involve a movie theater where the only things I found unique were the new popcorn seasonings and the rising ticket prices. Alas, I realize he's not incapable nor unwilling; he just doesn't know where to look for ideas. To assuage the situation, I've decided to take matters into my own hands. Each day I will post unique things to do in the Houston area with high hopes that my fiancé will one day read this, get ideas, come to his senses and plan unique dates all on his own. I call it, "The Cure for the Common Date."

“You'll find boredom where there is the absence of a good idea."

Since I strongly believe that the "dating" phase should never end, this blog applies to anyone from singles to marrieds and everything in between.
